Intro: Why move countries?
In search of xxx (write your own) in your life
Years ago,
I had a discussion with a bus driver in Spain who said: One always wants to stay in their hometown. If one has a good job in
their hometown, they would never want to leave. Back then I was twenty-three,
enjoying my Erasmus semester in Granada, hoping to stay there for longer and
dreaming of all other places in the world I will live in. I couldn’t agree less
with his statement.
If you’re
reading this blog, you probably also have some expat experiences, maybe already
many of them, or maybe you’ve only started thinking about moving to another country.
We may have
different motivations for moving abroad. Love, career and adventure will only be
some to name. Antoni and I had always felt life was too short to stay in only one
place. After some years of studying and working in Krakow, we came back to our
home region in the South of Poland and did everything people usually do to
settle – we built a house and had our first baby. To everybody’s surprise, we
also then decided it was time to try living somewhere else. Not because we were
unhappy where we were, but simply because it wasn’t enough for us and we wanted
to discover new places. Interestingly, becoming a new parent pushed us even
more into such a step. I always wanted to raise my child in a culturally
diverse environment and this is what I was looking for outside of my country.
Apart from
these inner voices telling us it was time for a new chapter, we had some
pragmatic motivations too. Our daughter was 1.5 years old and we thought it was
a good moment for her to adapt to a new country and language. At the same time,
my work contract was coming to an end, with no prospects for a next good job in
the area. We thought: it was now or never.
A few
months later we landed in Liverpool and started one of the biggest adventures of
our lives, full of excitement and challenges, which we share with you on this
blog.
